Our History
With over 400 years of history, there’s plenty to uncover with Penrallt Country House Hotel’s story.
From estate to family home, orphanage to hotel, Penrallt Country House Hotel has taken many forms over the centuries.
The Penrallt Estate has undertaken many forms including a working farm, a school and RAF offices. The building itself has a history stretching back over 120 years.
While refurbishing the Edwardian Mansion into a luxury hotel, we have sympathetically restored elements and respected the history, not only by offering elegance, but by naming the rooms after some of its biggest influences. From our Dylan Thomas rooms to our Jenkins rooms, the history rooted in this building will live on under our ownership.
The property was purchased by Griffith Jenkin Thomas and remained in his family for many years.
The house was rebuilt by Captain Thomas Jenkins, a commander in the Madras Naval Squadron.
The building was modernised by Agnes Mary Jenkins, daughter of Major General Alexander Jenkins, who died in 1901 and is buried in the family vault in Aberporth.
Agnes dies and the estate is sold.
New owner Gladys Williams opened a school for children from distressed areas. All that remains of the school is a row of coat-hooks in one of the upstairs cupboards.
The school is closed due to the effects of World War II.
The estate, owned by the Harewood Williams family, let out some of the rooms as RAF offices.
Under new ownership, Penrallt was turned into a hotel.
The old farm buildings are turned into Garden Rooms.
Extra holiday cottages are built on the grounds.
After a period of closure, the newly renovated Penrallt Country House Hotel is back open to the public.
With a natural ability to engage with people on any level with her warmth and enthusiasm for standards, Angela wanted to create a “home from home” from the outset for her guests, where everyone is welcome and where relaxation is so important. Drawing on her previous wellness experience, she added 2 luxury treatment rooms to the hotel and brought in Temple Spa as the brand of choice for treatments. Her team is nothing short of everything to the hotel and to Angela. She recruits locally and aims to provide a truly enjoyable work environment. Their commitment to the hotel and her journey has been the icing on the cake for the past 3 years.
She continues to develop Penrallt Hotel and would love to welcome you to her hotel.
In 2023, Angela achieved a humbling milestone, winning the title of Best Emerging Hotelier at The Welsh Enterprise Awards, after dedicating two years to owning the hotel.
